Nomuntu Murukani - Rise of the Matriarch

Nomuntu is a member of one of the first majority female anti-poaching units in South Africa. The Black Mamba’s work tirelessly to protect all boundaries of the 52,000ha Balule Nature Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger National Park.

The objectives of the Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit are not only the protection of rhinos through boots on the ground but also through being a role model in their communities. Women like Nomuntu are using their dedication and passion for wildlife conservation to make a difference in their local communities, becoming a voice for their community.
As a Black Mamba I feel proud in my community when I am wearing my uniform. When they look up at me they see a hero
- Nomuntu Murukani

The Black Mamba’s hold the belief that the ‘war’ on poaching will not be won with guns and bullets, but rather through social upliftment and the education of local communities surrounding the reserves.

These women are not only Anti-Poaching Rangers, they are role models who cherish life and do not want to live in a village of orphans and widows.

Nomuntu is one of only 32 women to complete the anti-poaching training and become a Ranger with the Black Mambas. We are so inspired and empowered by Nomuntu’s strength, bravery and dedication. Women like Nomuntu are not only making a huge difference within their communities, they are leading the way for future generations in the field of conservation.
